Match Report

Lee Morgan ripped through the Aberdare batting to set-up a convincing 7 wicket win for the home team and in turn putting them top of the table for the first time this season. After last weeks disappointing draw Celtic, thanks to Morgan, returned to winning ways with vengeance.

After winning the toss, experienced Aberdare captain John Derrick took the surprise decision to bat first on a damp track. This immediately back fired as Lee Morgan destroyed the top order.

Morgan who ‘retired’ at the beginning of the season due to back trouble or what is more clinically known as ‘the golf bug’ bowled with pace, swing and bounce in recording match-winning figures of 6 for 12.

None of the Aberdare batsman got to grips with Morgans pace and backed up by quality bowling from Barnes and Griffiths, they reduced the away side to 38-9. Only a rearguard 41 from wicket-keeper Jabionski, stubbornly supported by the solid Whetherby got the score past 80. Twirler Mark Davies taking a simple return catch to end the innings.

Celtic openers Gareth Hopkins and Nick Poole then got Celtic off to a flyer, putting on 47 for the 1st wicket and in turn proving that there was little wrong with the wicket. Poole taking a particular liking to former Celtic prospect Lloyd Ham, hitting him for 3 boundaries in 1 over.

Ham, returning to his former club for the first time since his move in the winter had a fruitless day, out for a duck with the bat and going for over 4 an over during a wicket less 5 overs. Not a happy return for the young seamer on a day he’ll want to forget.

Although they lost 3 wickets chasing down the small target, Hopkins for a decent 22, Phil Poole for a nervous 2 and Nick Poole for a well-made 46, Celtic cantered to the total inside 27 overs. Roger Barnes and Ian Herbert remaining unbeaten at the end.
